Supported OS Versions

SNMP Informant OS supports the following operating system versions:

  • Windows Server 2000 *
  • Windows Server 2003 *
  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Server 2012

Supported Application Versions

SNMP Informant OS supports the following application server versions:

  • Hyper-V 2008
  • Hyper-V 2012
  • Virtual Server 2005R2 *

* Note: OS and Application versions no longer supported by Microsoft will no longer be supported by Informant Systems, Inc. for this product.  Visit their lifecycle page here.

Data Provider Type

SNMP Informant OS contains both WMI and Performance Data Providers.  Data comes from both the performance monitor and WMI sub-systems.

Details

The WMI-OS and WMI-HW components were primarily developed for system administrators who are interested in gathering detailed WMI system and operational (though not necessarily performance) information from their deployed Windows infrastructure, as well as Network Management application developers looking to add significant functional enhancements to their programs.

  • Informant-WMI works across domains!  Conventional WMI and PDH require authentication.

  • Informant-WMI is faster than standard WMI!

What can I monitor with the WMI Provider for OS?

While only scratching the surface, here are a couple of examples of what you can do with SNMP Informant.  Following are a couple of example:

  • Want to GET Event log current Size?  Walk .1.3.6.1.4.1.9600.1.22.14.1.1.18 to find out.

  • Want to GET Event Log Maximum Size?  Walk .1.3.6.1.4.1.9600.1.22.14.1.1.29 to find out

  • Want to know the OS running on a particular box?  Query OID .1.3.6.1.4.1.9600.1.22.8.5.1.5.1.

  • To get the service pack version running on the remote system, query OID .1.3.6.1.4.1.9600.1.22.8.5.1.10.1.

  • BIOS manufacturers and versions

  • A listing of all services and their states (started, stopped, stop pending, etc.)

  • service startup states (automatic, manual or disabled).

  • Installed applications

  • Installed memory

  • ... AND MUCH, MUCH MORE!

The WMI-HW provider allows access to low level information on motherboards, hard drives, power supplies, etc.

Note that not all OIDS will be populated.  For example, the WMI-HW provider connects to hardware WMI classes, and sometimes those classes have no data.  That's because not all hardware vendors populate all the classes.  Be sure to download the SNMP Informant evaluation and and try SNMP Informant to to see if it provides the data you need!

Hyper-V

The Hyper-V component allows you to collect performance, state and configuration information from Microsoft Hyper-V Server.

Microsoft Hypervisor or Hyper-V, is a virtual machine manager, which is a program that allows multiple operating systems to share a single physical host (hardware).  Each operating system appears to have the host's processor, memory, and other resources all to itself, however, the hypervisor (a lower level) is actually controlling the host processor and resources, allocating what is needed to and for each virtual operating system.  For more information, click here.

Virtual Server

The Virtual Server component allows you to collect state and configuration information from Microsoft Virtual Server 2005.

Replaced by Hyper-V, Virtual Server also allowed the creation of multiple operating systems on a single physical host (hardware) although it did not support virtualization technology (BIOS).

WMI Hardware

The WMI-Hardware component allows you to collect hardware state and configuration information from Microsoft Server.

WMI Operating System

The WMI-Operating System component allows you to collect operating system state and configuration information from Microsoft Server.

With this data provider, you can collect information about OS drivers, service start-up parameters, processes, etc.

Supporting SETS, the WMI-OS version allows you to remotely:

  • query service state

  • start/stop/pause services

  • remotely execute programs

  • shutdown/restart servers
